Basics of how laser therapy works

Starting from the beginning: the tissues of the human body include many substances that have the ability to absorb energy at different levels. These substances are called photoacceptors or chromophores. In aesthetic medicine and cosmetology treatments, the tissue into which the laser beam is directed is the skin.

The primary photoacceptors involved are melanin, water, hemoglobin, as well as other proteins. Each of these substances, however, has the potential to absorb energy at different wavelengths. Melanin absorbs light between 400-1200 nm, water below 500 nm and above 1200 nm, and hemoglobin at specific wavelengths: 418, 542 and 577 nm.

The vast majority of aesthetic treatments using lasers are based on the principle of selective thermolysis. This is the intentional induction of thermal injury in a limited and intended tissue structure.

This is because these therapies reduce the risk of adverse reactions to zero, as the light beam that is emitted by the device has a negligible effect on the adjacent tissues.

Types of lasers

1. high-powered lasers

These are known as hard lasers. They find their use when performing invasive procedures, which are carried out by doctors or cosmetologists who are in close contact with a doctor who has all the courses and training.

The action of this type of laser is to restore the coagulation of the skin, its continuity, and then vaporization, or ablation. At this point it should be clearly emphasized that treatments using this laser have the greatest effect.

These lasers include CO2 laser, ruby laser, alexandrite laser and argon laser. They are mainly used to remove tattoos, scars, nevi and in skin rejuvenation treatments.

2. low and medium power lasers

They are also called biostimulative lasers. They are used both in cosmetology, dermatology and during rehabilitation. They are used to carry out ch procedures, i.e. those during which the continuity of the skin is not interrupted.

Examples of such treatments include scar, wound and ulcer removal, alopecia treatment, wrinkle reduction, hyperpigmentation removal and acne vulgaris. Low- and medium-power types of lasers include semiconductor lasers and helium-neon lasers.

3. fractional lasers

These are the latest generation of lasers. They allow the procedure to be carried out as safely as possible, with minimal risk to side effects.

All this is due to the selective action of light. This type of laser is mainly used for: removal of skin discoloration, wrinkle reduction, skin rejuvenation and reduction of stretch marks and other scars.

4. diode lasers

They are primarily used for permanent hair removal, but are also used for cellulite reduction.

5. IPL (Intense Pulse Light).

This device is classified as a laser, although it is not one. It emits a broad spectrum of diffuse light waves. The light beams, due to their different lengths, are absorbed by different chromophores, which are located in the skin.

These include hemoglobin and melanin, among others. It should also be noted here that this device allows cosmetologists to perform the therapy themselves.

Treatments using this light are performed to: tighten pores, fight signs of aging, remove skin discoloration, permanently remove hair, remove acne lesions, and close blood vessels and nullify skin erythema.
